If you suffer from acid reflux problem try avoiding three large meals, instead have frequent small meals. After dinner, do not lie on the bed for at least an hour. Elevate the head of your bed by 6 to 8 inches. This helps in preventing the acid to rise into the esophagus.

Milk and dairy products

For long, it was a common belief that drinking milk before going to sleep cures acid reflux problems. However, studies have shown that though drinking milk could only provide temporary relief, the rebound action of milk ultimately triggers greater acid production. Nonetheless, yogurt, cheese, low fat cream can be safely consumed by people suffering from acid reflux problems.

Foods to be avoided

Fatty foods stay in the stomach for long. Consequently, larger volume of acid is secreted in the stomach to digest the fat. Diet low in saturated fat is recommended for people suffering from acid reflux problems.

Chocolates, beverages that contain caffeine, spearmint, peppermint are believed to trigger acid secretion in the stomach. Alcoholic drinks, including beer and wine, are responsible for increasing production of acid.

Citrus fruits and juices, onions, garlic, tomatoes and spicy foods might trigger acid reflux in some individuals.

Safe foods

Banana and apple are considered the safest fruits for acid reflux problem sufferers. Broccoli, peas, beans, cabbage, carrots, baked potato could be included in the meal. Fish, lean meat and egg white can be part of the acid reflex diet. Foods should be baked, steamed and boiled.
