The meaning of the word Ama is the toxic material produced inside the body because of the weakened digestive fire. These toxic materials are then carried by vayu and are spread all over the body. At time it gets deposited in the joints and it causes swelling, redness and pain in the joints. This disease progress gradually and affect almost all joints and other body organs too. Ayurveda proposes excellent treatments for the management of the joint and nervous disease.

1. Dietary Regimen

The patient will be advised to avoid the consumption of certain foods like the dairy products, oily foods, fast and junk foods, Chinese foods, sweets, sour and salty foods. They also have to avoid ice creams and cold drinks and black gram, jaggery, fish etc too. Rheumatoid arthritis patients must include horse gram, old rice, wheat, butter milk, bitter gourd, garlic, wet ginger etc in their diet. All these will help them to control the disease.

2. Life style Modification

The rheumatoid patients are asked to do regular and light exercise like gentle walking after taking food. They are also asked to avoid the drinking of water right away after having food. They should use warm water for bathing and ought to avoid cold water bath. Excessive wind and cold breeze are also not favorable to them.

3. Drugs

Ayurvedic treatment consist of a lot of herbal medicines like withania somnifera(Ashwagandha), Commiphora wightii(Guggulu), Terminalia chebula (Haritaki), Alpinia galangal(Rasna), dry ginger (sunthi), Operculina turpethum(Trivert) etc. among these Commiphora wightii is considered to be the best medicine for rheumatoid arthritis. Castor oil is also recommended for such patients. You have to take these medicines only after consulting an ayurvedic doctor.

4. Therapy

Therapies are used to remove the toxins accumulated in the body.

a. Snehana

It is the oleation of the body both internally and externally. Affected parts are treated preliminarily.

b. Swedana

It is the steam application on the affected parts of the body. This helps you to reduce the inflammations and also help you to relive from the pain. Sand bag fomentation is also recommended in some cases.

c. Virechana Karma

This is a type of purification of the body by use of some herbal preparations. The consumption of herbal preparations will help you in purgation and thus the “Ama” toxins are removed from the body. The purified bowel will improve the absorption of the medicines.

Ayurvedic treatment will be different for different persons as it is done based on the severity of the disease. Usually it takes 14 to 28 days to complete the treatment.
