Orchids the queen of flowers require extra care for their growth. This is a plant that can be affected easily by the climatic conditions. This is because it is an epiphyte which takes its nutrients and water from the atmosphere.

Cares for an Orchid

1. Light

Light is an important factor that determines the growth of the orchid and its flowering. If the plant is getting less than the enough light then it won’t flower and it will produce dark green leaves. If the plant is exposed to extra light then it may burn or the leaves appear as light green or yellowish green and sometimes reddish. The leaves will be warmer than the surroundings. If the plant is not getting enough sun light then you can assist your plant with artificial fluorescent light for at least 12 hours a day.

2. Water

Orchid requires a moist rooting medium for its healthy growth. The best time to water the plant is early morning so that the excess water will drain by evening. Orchid requires watering once in a week in cold climate and twice in a week in dry weather. The frequency of watering largely depends on the growing medium and the size of the pot. A large pot with more moisture holding growing medium requires less frequent watering.

3. Humidity

Orchid prefers a humidity of 50% to 70% at day time. The humidity required for the plant has to be maintained in the summer. This can be done by either spraying water over the foliage or by keeping the pot in a tray containing water and pebbles. While spraying water make sure that the plant gets time to dry the leaves before night. While keeping the pot in tray care must be taken not to touch the base of the pot on water as it causes the capillary raise of water from the tray to the pot. So it is better to place the orchid pot over an inverted pot in the water tray. Pebbles have to be cleaned in every 2-3 months interval to avoid any infections.

4. Ventilation

Orchid requires enough ventilation for proper growth and to avoid disease incidence. It also protects the plant from sun burn.

5. Temperature

A day temperature of 70 degree F and night temperature of around 60 degree F are found to be ideal for orchids.

6. Fertilizer

An orchid requires an initial treatment with more nitrogen than phosphorous and potassium and more phosphorous and potassium than nitrogen towards the end of the season. This is because at the initial period the plant requires more nitrogen for healthy vegetative growth. While at the end of the season it requires more phosphorous and potassium for flowering.

7. Pruning

Periodical pruning and re potting is necessary for maintaining the healthy growth of the plant.

With proper caring you can increase your orchid collection.
