Causes of Acid Reflex Problems - Acid Reflux Treatment - Treatment of Gastroparesis | Tips on - Find TipsMany of us suffer from acid reflux problems. We often tend to attribute acid reflux to certain foods and beverages. Recent researches however, have shown that citrus fruits, spicy foods and coffee, which for long were considered as the villains that increase the volume of acid in our stomach, are not related to acid reflux problems. Acid reflux is instead linked to our lifestyle changes and certain diseases are responsible for this problem.

Lifestyle change

In our busy lives, we hardly have any time to cook a healthy meal. Often we rely on fast foods from popular fast food chains to relieve our hunger. These foods are rich in fat. Foods with high fat content stays for long in the stomach. The longer they remain in the stomach greater is the amount of acid produced by the stomach to digest the food. Overeating is also responsible for acid reflux. In order to digest the excess food, acid secretion in the stomach increases.

Certain alcoholic drinks, such as wine and beer triggers acid secretion. Mental stress and smoking are also associated with acid reflux and heartburn.

Low pressure in the sphincter

The sphincter muscle, which lies between the stomach and the esophagus is supposed to block the flow of acid upward from the stomach into the esophagus. If there is any defect in the sphincter muscles and it has low pressure, which fails to block the acid flow from the stomach to the esophagus, acid reflux develops.

The exact cause of low pressure in the sphincter muscle is unknown. It is believed that pregnancy, depression medicines and hypertension can be responsible for this defect.

Consumption of Bisphosphonate drugs

Women, who are having Bisphosphonate drugs for treatment of osteoporosis, occasionally complain of acid reflux problems. Acid reflex might developed from prolonged consumption of this class of medicine.

People who are overweight often suffer from acid reflux. The pressure that the excess fat exerts on the stomach is thought to be responsible for this problem.

The stomach content of individuals who suffer from Gastroparesis takes too long to empty. The acid secreted by the stomach therefore remains in the stomach for a long time and therefore tends to rise up into the esophagus.
