Cervical Cancer- Causes And Symptoms & Alarming Signs Of Cervical Cancer » Cervical Cancer: Causes And SymptomsCancer of the cervix, called cervical cancer, is slowly inching towards becoming the most common form of cancer among women – next to breast cancer. Cervical cancer is classified in stages according to size and spread.

A battery of medical tests and X-rays can reveal if there is cervical cancer. It usually takes years for cervical cancer to take root. It starts as a condition called dysplasia that is treatable and can be easily detected.

The most common cause of this type of cancer is a sexually-transmitted disease called HPV (Human Papillomavirus Virus). HPV may sometimes lie dormant for years together without showing any signs. A poor immunity, high-risk sexual behaviour (sex without protection with several partners), a history of smoking, long continued use of birth-control pills, etc, can cause cervical cancer.

Usually, cervical cancer has no symptoms. Any kind of pain in the pelvic region or the back or legs is generally dismissed as regular period pains. Most signs start showing up when the disease has advanced. These include change in menstrual cycle, unusual vaginal discharge, etc.

Change in your periods. Any alarming change in your monthly cycles that cannot be explained (you’ve been taking no medication and there is no known illness) needs to be looked into. If your bleeding suddenly becomes heavy or light, get yourself checked.

Bleeding. If you experience pain during intercourse, or there is an abnormal vaginal bleeding during douching or when you touch your vagina, consult a doctor immediately.

Change in vaginal discharge. If your discharge shows any significant changes – in smell, texture, feel – or contains mucus and blood, it could possibly be cancerous.

If the cancer is not treated and is allowed to deteriorate, the symptoms may become more pronounced: urinary problems like pain during urination, anemia, sudden bleeding that does not coincide with your monthly period, pelvic pain or back pain, and weight loss.

In case you notice any of these sings, don’t panic. The problem with the symptoms of cervical cancer is that they are not specific and can be related to several other physical ailments and conditions. Regular pelvic exams and pap smears are recommended to check any cervical abnormality and for early detection of cervical cancer. The best thing to do, in case you display any of the symptoms, is to consult your doctor.
