These arteries can be viewed as conduits of the body’s blood. The accumulation of fat deposits restricts the blood flow to the different organs. Decreased blood flow to the heart can cause heart attacks whereas restricted blood flow to the brain can cause strokes.

There are no physical symptoms for the diagnosis of cholesterol .It can only be determined by a blood test. A cholesterol baseline test is one, which helps determine the level of cholesterol in the blood .The ideal age to have this test is at age 20 and then to repeat it after every 5 years. High-risk group like those that have a history of heart disease or high cholesterol are advised to increase the test frequency.

The blood carries cholesterol and these molecules are attached to proteins. These are known as lipoproteins. The different types of cholesterol carried by the lipoproteins designate the classifications of different types of cholesterol. LDL stands for Low Density Cholesterol. This is referred to as bad cholesterol as this causes build in the arteries making them hard and narrow. Very Low Density Cholesterol VLDL is the type of cholesterol, which contains most triglycerides. These VLDL molecules make the LDL molecules bigger and can make deposits in the arteries larger. Triglycerides by themselves are very harmful and these need to be controlled by taking prescribed medication in addition to the one given to control cholesterol. HDL or High Density Cholesterol is the good guy as it picks up the extra molecules of cholesterol and diverts them back to the liver.

Factors like physical inactivity and obesity and poor diet contribute to high degrees of LDL. Genetic makeup also plays a major role. Cholesterol can be increased by a number of factors and these include smoking. Smoking can damage the walls of the arteries and constricts them so restricted blood flow is received. increasing the risks manifold. A BMI (Body Mass Index) of less than 30 puts you at risk. A diet replete with red meat, full fat dairy products increases the level of LDL in the blood stream. Exercise can help in reduction of LDL but physical inactivity can do harm. High blood pressure damages the arterial walls. Diabetes sufferers at risk too as blood sugar damages the lining of the walls of the arteries. A family history of one of more of these diseases also outs the individual in a high-risk group.

High cholesterol can cause arteriosclerosis. Complications can arise due to high levels of cholesterol and these include the risk of heart attack, stroke, and chest pain. Chest pain or episodes of angina are common for people at risk. Deposits in the arteries are known as plaques. These plaques rupture often and form a blood clot at the site. This clot may prevent the blood flow or this may be carried by the blood stream and if it blocks any artery then disaster may befall. A part of the heart is starved of the oxygen rich blood and this may result in a heart attack. A stroke may occur when a part of the brain is deprived of oxygen.

These are lifestyle diseases these cannot be altered much by medication. These have to be removed by making changes to the lifestyle itself. An active lifestyle with proper meal choices and adequate stress levels can make your life a heaven and help you on your way.
