Though there is no particular time in pregnancy during which this pain is suffered, most of women complain about groin pain in third trimester. There are many reasons given for this type of pain.

One of major reasons for groin pain in pregnancy is increased hormones levels. For supporting growth of embryo, pregnancy hormones are released in large quantities in the body of mother, which include relaxin and progesterone. These hormones are responsible for the loosening of joints and muscles in the body. Ligaments are no exception and they also get loosened due to these hormones. All these changes occur for facilitating child birth. As a result, groin pain is felt and sometimes, it can be very severe.

Another reason for pregnancy groin pain is the structural changes that take place in the body of mother. It is to be understood that in pregnancy, body of females undergo change every day in one form or the other. Uterus grows continuously and stomach muscles also get stretched. Since baby increases in size continuously, it puts strain on the hips and pelvic region of the mother. Center of gravity also shifts. As a result, discomfort occurs in the groin region and pain is felt.

Weight gain during pregnancy is also one of reasons for groin pain. Due to gain in weight, strain is felt on the hips and pelvis, which are continuously stretching up to child birth. Sometimes, due to poor posture also, groin pain is felt. It has been seen that most of women bend and sit in improper manner, which causes pressure on hips.

Standing for extended period also results in pregnancy groin pain. Similarly, if a pregnant woman is suffering from stress, it can cause stiffness and pain not only in groin but also in all the parts of body.

Intermittent groin pain can also be caused due to round ligament, which holds the uterus in its place. Due to symphysis pubis dysfunction also, pregnancy groin pain occurs. In this disorder, pelvic joints become unstable.
