Among foods that need to be avoided strictly nuts and seeds are foremost. Peanuts, dried fruits and seeds such as sesame seeds, pumpkin and caraway seeds are difficult to digest and thus exert great pressure on the colon.

In addition to nuts corn and corn products like foods made of corn flour or popcorn too need to be strictly restricted. You also need to abstain from eating raw vegetables especially the cruciferous vegetables like cabbage, lettuce, broccoli and kale.

Spicy and processed food need to be strictly avoided. Junk foods and those high in fatty content like pizzas, burgers and those containing chili peppers can harm your intestinal walls and increase the severity of the inflammation of the diverticula.

Apart from this other foods that you need to avoid are refined foods like white rice and flour, beans, onions, lentils, prune juice and strawberries and blackberries. Steer clear of acidic juices containing tomatoes and lemon that irritate the stomach.

Since a diet low in essential fibers is one of the major causes of this disease, it is advisable that you increase the consumption of foods such as low fiber cereals, grains, carrots, mushroom, eggplant, peaches, bananas and apples in your diet. Apart from a well planned diet which takes into account the foods that need to be avoided you can also prevent diverticulitis by regular physical exercises.
