Setting realistic goals is the first part to realising them quickly. Becoming the manager of the concern in 2 years may not be a realistic goal when compared to becoming either a team lead or a coach in the same time frame.

Always work towards achieving the next position in the job heirarhcy instead of reaching out for further prospects. Find out where you stand in the company and what your next role or job would be.

Find out the responsibilities of that particular role and work towards understanding and implementing the same in your current role wherever possible. Opt for trainings or projects that can enhance your skillsets to suit the next role and leave no stone unturned to make your manager notice the same.

Volunteer to do extra tasks above the set of duties you already have. A company is not looking for an individual who waits to return home as soon as his/her shift ends. Rather, they are looking for a person they can rely on when they need someone to chip in and lend a hand.

Don’t wait for others to approach you for help. Rather, approach your managers and give them the assurance that they can rely on you for extra support whenever needed.

Remember, there’s no easy way to go about getting a promotion. You need to sacrifice a few things to get what you want. And if a few extra hours of your free time need to be sacrificed, go ahead and do it.

Don’t get tagged with a specific label. For example, if you have kids, your managers may probably think that you would not want to relocate to another branch, work long hours or change your shift timings which are conditions that might be required for the new job function.

However, if you have no issues about moving, working long hours or changing your shift timings, then you need to inform your managers or the human resources team about the same.

Challenges are a part and parcel of daily life and work place challenges are no exception. As and when you face a challenging task in the company, step forward and take it up instead of staying back and letting someone else handle the responsibility.

For example, let’s say that you work in a call center and your company is about to unexpectedly receive a higher call flow for the next four hours and your managers ask for additional help. Instead of shivering back at the thought of spending another four hours in office, step up and take the responsibility.

This will show the management that you care for the concern and will work for the betterment of the company. In addition to boosting your self confidence, you will also find out that you efforts are recognised more quickly afterwards.

Leadership roles require effective problem solving skills and running to your manager everytime you face a problem can only project you off as a bad leader.

As and when you face a roadblock, try to figure out how to solve it without complaining about the same to your higher-up. If you think the problem can be solved without a higher up, work on the same. This will show your managers how effective you are in handling difficult situations.

Most of the times, employees get rejected for appraisals or promotions because of their immediate managers who either don’t want them to leave the team or are not in good terms with specific employees.

If you and your immediate manager are not on good terms, you can be sure that you will be rejected for certain positions within the company. Instead of complaining about him/her to everybody you know, try to figure out what went wrong.

If you find yourself at fault, walk up to your immediate supervisor, talk to him/her about the situation and try to patch up. It is considered wise to bond with your supervisor or manager at a professional level.

If on the other hand, there are certain not so pleasing reasons as to why your immediate supervisor is unhappy with you, make sure to let his/her manager know about your efforts and work. If you feel your immediate manager will never let you go, then there is no other way about it.

And finally, the key to getting a promotion is to be patient about the same. Instead of whining and complaining about being passed over for a promotion or appraisal, try to figure out what went wrong and work on setting things right. This way, the next time a promotion or appraisal comes along; you know you will be ready for the same.
