Skin performs various functions:

1) It controls the body temperatures and keeps out infections.

2) It protects the delicate tissues under the skin.

3) Skin contains a variety of nerve endings that react to heat, touch, pressure, cold, vibration, etc.

4) It also stores lipids and water.

5) Some animals use the skin as respiratory organ. It mends itself when damaged.

6) The skin also acts as a water proof coat. The Keratin in the skin and the sebaceous glands help to make our skin water proof.

5) Sensitive

How does the skin work?

The structures and cells in the skin perform various functions:

• The outer layer protects against chemicals or particles and also preserves and balances the internal environment and prevents loss of water.

• The melanocytes, lymphocytes, phagocytes, the langerhans cells and mast cells protect the skin against microbes, antigens and ultra violet rays.

• The dermis and subcutaneous fat make the skin a strong and elastic covering for the body. It helps the skin to act as a shock absorber and reserves calories required for the skin.

• The sweat glands controls the temperature of the body and body odor and the sebaceous glands acts as a lubricator and water proof coat.

• The specialist nerve endings provide sensation ability to the skin.

You have to know your skin type and take care of your skin. You should also follow a balanced and healthy diet to have a clear, smooth and wrinkle free skin.
