Diamonds have always fascinated man, be it the Romans who thought them to be splinters of some fallen star or the Greeks who thought them to be tears of the gods and goddesses. Diamonds are considered to be luxurious, desirable and very romantic gifts. Though they are known to be the hardest substance in the world yet they are not immune to damage. Here are a few tips to keep your diamonds free from harm:

Always remember to visit your jeweler once a year to have your diamond checked. Have the mounting and the prongs that hold the diamond in its place checked in order to ensure prevention of it falling out. The visit will also see to it that the professional ‘shine-up’ is given to it.

Dust, moisturizer, soap reduces the shine and brilliance of your diamond by putting a film on it especially at the back. To keep them from getting soiled you can clean them at home itself using a mild liquid in lukewarm water and a soft toothbrush to gently clean them. You could also buy one of the branded liquids for jewellery cleaning complete with the kits. Later rinse
with a soft cloth and do not touch the diamonds with your fingers after they have been cleaned.

Diamond jewellery should be stored in velvet lined pouches, each item in separate pouches. You could also use jewellery boxes lined with any soft fabric separate from other jewellery items having separate compartments. This will keep your diamonds away from scratches.

Try not to wear your stuff while doing household work or while exercising or doing heavy work. Do not let them come in touch with chlorine which might not harm them but discolour the mounting. Finally remember not to remove your diamond ring and put it in the bathroom or the kitchen while working because you might just forget to put it back and there is every chance of it getting lost.
