However rather than throwing away this furniture, you can give it a new lease of life by giving it a fresh coat of paint.

Painting old wooden furniture not only adds to the beauty of the furniture but also helps in protecting it from mold and mildew. Moreover it is quite easy to do and all you need is a day along with some basic painting supplies to transform your furniture.

Before you can start off with painting the furniture you need to ensure whether it is structurally sound or not. Issues such as wobbly legs, cracks in the wood or problems with the wood itself such as peeling and cracking need to be addressed. It is a good idea to keep your furniture from places where there is moisture and humidity as it can result in mildew and mold formation.

For the furniture painting you will need light grit sandpaper, water based primers and paints, paintbrush, tack clothes or damp rags and a paint tray. Once you have ensured that all the structural issues related with the furniture are resolved, you need to clean and dry the furniture using sponge and soapy water. If you are painting nightstands or dressers then take out the drawers and clean them thoroughly.

Start off with sanding the furniture with light grit sandpaper. This ensures that you have a smooth surface for painting. You can also use liquid sander for this job. Wear a dust mask and gloves and sand the furniture at least two to three times to ensure the best finish. Once you are done, remove the excess dust with a tack cloth and then vacuum the furniture properly.

Now brush the water based primer on the furniture and the allow it to dry for some hours. The coats of primer will depend on the color of the original paint and the new color that you are opting for. It is a good idea to opt for several thin coats of paint. Let the first coat dry off completely before applying the second and third coat.

Choosing the right color paint for the furniture is very important. You can find different types of paints in home improvement and general stores. It is a good idea to use thin water based paint for a smooth finish. Opt for a paint which provides a semi gloss or eggshell finish to your furniture.

Mix the paint well in a paint tray and then brush on the first coat with a clean paintbrush. Ensure that the first coat is sparse and you use long broad strokes to paint the furniture. Once this is done and the paint dries off, apply the second and third coat.
