Use Compact Fluorescent lights

Check your electronic appliances and equipments
Shut down the computer monitor when not in use. To economize your energy bill as well as spare your computer from wear and tear, shut off the monitor of your computer if you are not using it for over 20 minutes and if you are not using it for over two hours completely shut down your computer.
Instead of using screen savers put your computer to sleep mode when it is idle. In the sleep mode, computers use 70% less energy. If possible, switch over to a laptop computer. Desktop computers use 90% more energy than laptop computers.
Always shut down TV, VCR, DVD, when not in use. Even on standby mode, these equipments consume significant amount of energy.
Always run your washing machine and drier with full load

Use Energy Star products
It might be a lot more expensive to replace your functional appliances, but while buying new electronic appliances and equipments always go for Energy Star products.

Light up only the working space
While working on your desk, instead of illuminating the entire room, light up only the working space with a table lamp.

Check your refrigerator
To avoid wastage of energy, always keep your refrigerator and freezer full. If you have little content in your refrigerator, keep a container packed with ice in the freezer. In an empty fridge, there are not enough objects to trap the cold. This will make the refrigerator turn on and off frequently consuming lots more energy. Carefully set the temperature of your refrigerator and the freezer. The temperature of the refrigerator should be kept between 3 and 5 degrees Celsius and the temperature of the freezer should lie between -18 and 15 degree Celsius.

Check your air cooler and air conditioners
In order to economize your power bills, do not over cool your rooms. The temperature of your bedroom and living room should not be lowered below 24 degrees Celsius.

Check your water heater
Check that the insulation of your water heater is working properly. The pipes carrying water from the water heater should be placed close to the bathrooms and kitchen. The longer the length of the pipe, the larger is the amount of energy lost on transportation.
