Most children who are hyperactive could be suffering from what is known as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity. This means that your child is not being willfully disobedient; he is just unable to control his emotions. Hyperactive children tend to fidget a lot; they are restless and throw innumerable tantrums. Scolding and punishing them is not the way to handle things.

If have a hyperactive child on your hands, here is how you can calm them down when they seem out of control. This first step would be to teach your child how to deep breathe. Take in a deep breath and let it out slowly through the mouth. This will help calm your child when they are feeling frustrated. It is also a useful means of calming for the parents as well. Allow your child to enjoy a warm bubble bath at the end of the day. This has a soothing effect. Adding some bathing salts also helps.

Never underestimate the power of touch. Give your child a nice massage. This could be rubbing their shoulders or even lightly running your fingers in their hair. Keep a box full of knick-knacks and surprises and turn to it when your child needs an outlet for that pent up energy. Get them to collect things or think up a game from what is in the box.

Make sure that your home has a calming effect. Avoid lots of clutter and be more approachable. Hyperactive children need some system in their life. Set up a routine for them and try and stick to it as much as possible. Keep their days packed so that they don’t feel bored. Assign a particular place in the house for your child to turn to when they are feeling frustrated. Make this place as calming as possible. A corner where the fish tank is in clear view would be nice. If your child can write, encourage them to start a diary. This is one place where they can pour out their feelings without feeling shy or odd. Respect their privacy and don’t attempt to read it.

Take small holidays with your child. A change of scene will do them a world of good, just as it does for adults. Make sure that your child’s diet is free from excessive sugar and has foods that are easy on the system.
