And while a vegetarian lifestyle can result in reducing many illnesses, there are several disadvantages to not consuming meats and other animal products. One pro of vegetarianism is that a diets high in fruits, vegetables and whole grains reduces the risk of several diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and obesity. The world Cancer Research Fund states that vegetarians are at a lower risk of developing cancer. Medical professionals show that those that follow a vegetarian diet have a fifty percent less probably of having heart and cardiovascular conditions.

Some medical experts state that those that do not consume animals and animal by-products can live up to ten years longer than those that eat meat. Vegetarianism promotes an equal balance of the three macronutrients necessary to sustain good health. A vegetarian diet is high in carbohydrates, proteins and fats. This diet helps participants build a strong immune system. The chances of a vegetarian becoming obese are very little. And of course, fruits and vegetables are less costly than meat.

While this all sounds good, there are several short comings to a vegetarian diet. Because vegetarians do not eat meat and animal by-products, they lose out on getting proper amounts of select vitamins and minerals such a Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, iron, zinc, and copper. They also do not receive the essential nine amino acids that are commonly found in meat.

Vitamin B12 which is found in meat is primarily responsible for changing protein, fats and carbs into energy. Because vegetarians do not receive an adequate amount of the nine essential amino acids, they may experience periods of sluggishness because their blood sugar levels are not stabilized. Fruits and vegetables are not the best source of protein, iron and calcium. It is suggested that vegetarians take supplements to meet the body’s requirements.
