Now days, many skin moisturizers are equipped with sun screen qualities also. These moisturizers act in dual way; moisturizing and sun screening. Strength of a sunscreen lotion or cream is determined by its SPF. SPF stands for sun protection factor. How long a sunscreen is effective over the skin is determined by its SPF. SPF is a number such as 15, 30, or 50.

While choosing right sunscreen for yourself, you must determine the time taken by your skin to get sunburn without sunscreen. Now multiply this duration with the SPF count of the sunscreen.

If a person gets sunburn in 10 minutes without sunscreen, then a sunscreen with SPF 15 can give him sun protection for 150 minutes. People who have sensitive skin get rashes very quickly while being in sun; they should use sunscreen lotion with SPF 30 or more.

Sunrays have two types of UV radiations: UVA and UVB. Some of the sunscreens offer protection against just UVA. But you should use broad spectrum sunscreens which mean sunscreens which offer protection against both kinds of UV radiations.

Sunscreen lotions have zinc oxide or titanium dioxide which absorbs UV rays. Zinc Oxide provides more protection than titanium dioxide. Another chemical Octocylene, commonly known as cinnamate is effective on both types of radiations.

Tips to apply sunscreen for more effective sun protection:

Apply sunscreen 15-20 minutes before going out. For proper sun protection, apply it liberally; just do not skimp. Keep applying sunscreen after every two hour if you stay longer in sun. Apply sunscreen after swimming, bathing or heavy perspiration.
