Momos (Steamed Dumpling) Recipe - How To Make Steamed Dumplings & Steps To Make MomosMomo’s are steamed dumplings. They can be filled with many vegetables and meats. Some vegetables commonly used while making momo’s are; mushrooms, onions, potatoes, etc. Chicken, beef or pork mince can also be stuffed in momo’s. They are a popular food in Nepal and some parts of India. They are eaten with a spicy tomato sauce.

Ingredients:

Flour (2 cups)
Chicken mince (2 cups)
Onion (1 large)
Tomatoes (2 large)
Garlic Cloves (10 in count)
Soy sauce (3 tbsps)
Chilli sauce (1 tbsp)
Green Chilies (4 in count)
Vegetable Oil (3 tbsp)
Pepper
Salt to taste
Water

Cooking Time:30 minutes

Active Time: 20 minutes

Method:

1. Mix flour with water and salt to make dough. Knead the dough till it is stiff; do not let it be limp. Make equal sized balls from this dough. The ball should not be very big in size. Keep in mind that you have to roll them into flat circles with radius of about 2 inches. Keep these rolled and flattened circles aside till you need them. Chop all the vegetables very finely. Onions and mushrooms should be chopped to tiny bits, almost minced. Peel about 8-10 garlic cloves also. Mince them also finely.

2. Heat vegetable oil in a pan; use any vegetable oil like canola, sunflower, safflower, etc. Add the minced garlic cloves and toss them around. Be careful as they can char really fast. Throw in the finely minced onion when the garlic turns brown. Stir the onions and garlic in the pan till the onion becomes translucent. Now, add the chicken mince into the pan. Stir till the meat is cooked thoroughly. Now, add soy and chilli sauce into the pan. Sprinkle salt and pepper as per your taste. Freshly ground pepper tastes amazing in this dish. Stir for a couple of minutes on a medium flame and turn off the gas when the meat is done.

3. Now fill the flattened circles of dough with the cooked meat. Dab some water on the edges of the circle and seal them. You can twist or pinch along the sides to close the rolled dough circles. It is easy to make creative shapes with dough circles. You can make crescent shaped stuffed packs also.

4. Now heat some water in a wok. Fill about three-fourths of the wok with water. Bring the water to boil in the wok. Now, just slide the momos inside the wok. Place the momos one by one along the sides of the wok. Then just release them easily. Don’t just throw them in hot water as some of the hot water might splash outside on you. The momos will cook in hot water. Once they are cooked thoroughly, they will rise to the top of the wok and float.

5. Momos are eaten with a zesty tomato sauce. You will need two large tomatoes and 4-5 green chilllies to make this sauce. Boil the tomatoes till they are well done. Peel and mash them into a pulp. Take a blender and throw in the green chillies, tomatoes, some water, salt and pepper. Gring the mixture into a fine paste. Serve with the hot momo’s.
