Nikon Coolpix P300 Review, Features And Specifications

If you are looking for a camera that is easy to carry but which gives you ample opportunity to experiment with photography then there is a great offering from the Nikon stable, the newly launched Coolpix P300. This little 12.2 megapixel camera comes with a CMOS sensor and can be aptly called the little brother of the Coolpix P7000.

Visually falling into the same category as the Canon Powershot S95 and the Olympus XZ-1, this little genie has a higher resolution. Moreover it also offers full HD video recording at full 1080p. But its lower price point, smaller sensor (1/2.3” compared to the rivals’ 1/1.6” or 1/1.7”) and inability to record RAW pictures are considered the drawbacks.

Those who are not that serious about photography may not be much concerned with these technicalities, but those a bit more serious may think for a moment or two to pick it up ahead of its competitors. That can bring one to the conclusion that the P300 may be more of a competitor to the Canon SD 4000 or the IXUS 300HD.

The general build quality of the Coolpix P300 is excellent. For a compact camera the manual control option is as good as the high end compacts like the P7000 or the S95. The optically stabilized lens combining with the low aperture of f/1.8 – 4.9 makes this the fastest lens available on the body of a compact camera. The result is it can give excellent picture in the low light condition with the least of noise. Its wide end of 24mm is also the widest on offer in its category. 4.2X zoom multiply to 100 mm in 35mm format. This is slightly lower than the others in the group. The 3 inch LCD at the rear sports a bright 921k dots display, the specification that Nikon uses in the displays of its mid and high-end SLRs.

The most important feature to be incorporated into the P300 is the full HD video mode. Full HD mode is quite rare in compact cameras and is absent in its more expensive competitors. In fact, Nikon has included almost all the features that one desires to have in an easy-to-carry compact camera at a reasonable price.

Those who do not want to spend much time on adjustments have 18 available scene modes including the Scene auto selector for easy identification of the best settings for a particular situation. In-camera special effects include Soft, Nostalgia Sepia, High Key, Low Key and the High contrast Monochrome.

On the whole the Nikon Coolpix P300 is a good compact with a great feel on the hand and a great camera to carry about in your shirt pocket.
