It is a sore that develops in the lining of the stomach or duodenum. When the ulcer is found in the stomach, it is called gastric ulcer and when it occurs in the duodenum, it is called duodenal ulcer. A person can have either or both of these ulcers.

Causes of peptic ulcers

When the mucosal lining of the stomach is destroyed, the hydrochloric acid present in the digestive juices that otherwise aid digestion, finds their way to the wall of the stomach damaging it and ulcer develops. Three main factors are primarily responsible for the destruction of the inner lining of the stomach. These factors are bacteria, anti-inflammatory drugs and other diseases.


Nearly two-thirds of peptic ulcers are caused through bacterial infections. Helicobacter pylori are responsible for causing peptic ulcer. This bacterium is generally transmitted through contaminated food. Antibiotics are used in treating patients suffering from bacterial infections.

Anti-inflammatory drugs

Prolonged use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin and ibuprofen could also damage the mucous lining of the stomach. Use of corticosteroids also increases the vulnerability to peptic ulcers.


Diseases causing peptic ulcer are comparatively rare. Chronic diseases such as liver problems, emphysema and rheumatoid arthritis increase the risk of peptic ulcers. Sudden injury could damage the mucous lining causing peptic ulcers. Mental stress and genetic factors could also aid increased secretion of hydrochloric acid in the stomach beyond the normal level, causing destruction of the mucous lining.


A proper regular diet prevents occurrence of gastric ulcers. Both overeating as well as skipping meals are bad for your digestive health. Space out your meals evenly. Eat slowly, chewing your food well. Always have your meals in a relaxed environment. Include milk in your diet. People afflicted with peptic ulcer should avoid caffeine. Citrus fruits, tomatoes and chocolates might cause discomfort if you are suffering from peptic ulcer. Hot and spicy foods though are not responsible for developing ulcers, should be avoided by people who have peptic ulcer, as they might increase irritations. Peptic ulcer patients should not consume alcohols.
