Restless Leg Syndrome- Symptoms And Treatment & How To Deal With Restless Leg Syndrome » Treatment For Restless Leg SyndromeRestless leg syndrome is a neurological disorder in which the sufferer feels uncomfortable when his leg is resting and he wants to get up and move around in order to combat this problem. The sufferer may also feel a strange sensation in his legs like crawling or severe itching. Sometimes he also feels the jolt of electric shocks inside his legs. Any person irrespective of his age or gender is prone to suffer from this condition; especially women who have attained menopause are at the greater risks.

Here are some of the symptoms of restless leg syndrome, which signals the sufferer to seek medical help before the conditions worsens. The sufferer is greatly disturbed with sleepless nights because of the unpleasant sensations in legs like tingling, cramping, itching and tugging. Due to the disturbed sleep his daytime activities gets impaired.

When his legs are resting while he is traveling or watching TV or just sitting relaxed for sometime he will have an uncontrolled urge to walk and move his legs.

This condition is normally common in people who smoke, take excessive alcohol, are iron deficient, lead a stressful lifestyle and pregnant women. In the restless leg syndrome is gestational, the symptoms will go away after delivery. It is also associated with chronic diseases like kidney disease and Parkinson’s disease. However, taking treatment for these chronic diseases will not give relief from the restless leg syndrome.

Initially the doctor will take blood tests and study about the nervous and muscular condition. The patient may be referred to a sleep specialist at a sleep clinic. He is put to sleep and his sleep habits are evaluated and the leg movements are checked.

If the person is iron-deficient iron supplements are prescribed for him. The level of dopamine level in the brain is also checked. Dopamine plays an important role in keeping the nervous system healthy and ensures its normal function.

Reduction in the dopamine level leads to neurological problems like Parkinson’s disease. Therefore for restless legs syndrome the medications used for Parkinson’s disease is sometimes prescribed. Ropinirole and Pramipexole which contains dopamine are prescribed. These drugs increase the dopamine levels in the brain and regulate the muscle movements.

Mild dosage of sleep medications and muscle relaxants are also prescribed. These drugs relax the muscles and induce sleep. Opiates and Narcotics like Darvon and Percodan are administered. They are sedative and have pain relieving properties.

However opiates dull the senses and they should be administered under strictly under the physician’s prescriptions. For some people epileptic medications are also administered. If the restless leg syndrome leads to seizures, the anticonvulsants like Neurontin and Gabapentin are given to the patients. These drugs will help to reduce muscle contractions.

The patient should learn to keep himself cool and relaxed in every situation in order to have a peaceful sleep. He should also go for moderate exercise like walking, swimming, aerobics and yoga. He should take rest at a regular routine and have a scheduled pattern of sleep.

A warm bath and giving massage to the legs with essential oils will relax his muscles. Application of hot or cold pack is also effective to the patients. He should abstain himself from smoking, alcohol, tobacco, and caffeine. Above all, the patient should take a healthy diet.
