As a tribute to his sportsmanship, the ICC has appointed the master blaster as the official ambassador for Cricket World Cup 2011.

Tendulkar, who made his debut at 16, will play his sixth One Day International Cricket World Cup next year. Before Tendulkar, Pakistan’s Javed Miadad was the only player to have played in six World Cups.

The tenth ICC Cricket World Cup, touted to be the world’s third largest sporting event, will begin from 19 February next year. The event will be co-hosted by India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Earlier, Pakistan was supposed to co-host the event. However, following terrorist attack on Sri Lankan cricketers in Lahore, last year, the World Cup venues were shifted from Pakistan to India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

In a statement ICC said, “Tendulkar will be called upon to promote and support a variety of ICC initiatives for the tournament.”

According to Harron Lorgat, ICC Chief Executive, ICC is lucky to receive the support of an extraordinary cricketer for its flagship event.

“I don’t think any other player has inspired a nation like he has and the respect and affection he enjoys goes way beyond his native India. Many other athletes and sports fans around the globe admire what he consistently achieves and what he does for cricket.”

The master blaster who said that he was thrilled to play in “such an important and widely followed event” promises that his team will do “everything they can to win the World Cup on the home soil”.

Co-hosts India and Bangladesh will face each other in the inaugural match to be played in Dhaka. The two semi-finals will be played on 29 March and 30 March in Colombo and Mohali, respectively. Mumbai will be the venue of the World Cup final on 2 April. Fourteen teams will participate in the grand sporting event.

In his two-decade long career, Tendulkar has been the icon of millions of cricket lovers not only in India, but also throughout the world. He amassed the largest number of runs in international cricket. He has played 172 Tests and 442 One Day Internationals.
