Signs and Symptoms of Menopause & How to Treat Menopause Symptoms » Symptoms of menopauseMenopause is a natural biological process experienced by every woman when the age of bearing a child comes to an end. The woman stops having menstrual periods. It is a natural process of ageing and cannot be considered as an illness. It is a transition in a woman’s life. The average age range at which a woman experiences menopause is 48 to 55. It occurs due to changes in hormones.

The symptoms of menopause differ from woman to woman. Some experience very little or no signs whereas others have to fight a range of alterations in their body.

Some very common symptoms of menopause are:

Hot Flashes:

Hot flashes occur in approximately 75% of women. It is feeling of warmth spreading in the whole body. It lasts for a few minutes. Hot flashes increase the heartbeat and temperature of the skin. They usually last for 2 to 3 years.

Changes in vagina:

Due to changes in estrogen levels, the lining of the vagina is affected. It becomes dry and thin. Some women feel pain during intercourse. Vagina becomes itchy and dry and emotionally you may feel older. Changes in vaginal discharge are also noted.

Burning sensation on urination, also frequent urge to urinate is very common.A change in shape of breast is also possible during the onset of menopause.Some women gain weight around the waist and abdomen.

Menstrual irregularity is common as you approach menopause. You may skip a month, or your periods may come later than the expected date, or they may come early. It is because of decrease in estrogen levels.

Increase in facial hair:

Hair loss is a gradual process. You may also notice loss of pubic hair. Increase in facial hair and thinning of hair on other parts of body is common and normal unless accompanied by some other illness.

Fatigue:

Fatigue is defined as a continuous feeling of tiredness, weakness. It is common for women undergoing menopausal transition. But fatigue can have a major impact on your work life, relationships.

Every woman who is experiencing any of the above menopausal symptoms must consult her doctor for a annual physical check up.
Some changes in lifestyle, diet, medications help in controlling menopausal symptoms that become bothersome.
