The Hangover 2 Movie Review

The Hangover 2 Movie Review - The Hangover 2 Story, Movie Review, Cast And RatingDirected by Todd Phillip, ‘The Hangover II’ released on May 26th 2011 and looks very much like the original in terms of concept, story and characters. A few minute details have been changed here and there for a different look (not feel). However, the movie in its entirety resembles the original to the extent that you can simply replace the titles and never know which one of the movies came first.

Synopsis:

The friends are back again in the sequel, getting ready for Stu’s (Ed Helms) marriage in Thailand. Stu is about to get married to a Thai-American woman and best friends Phil (Bradley Cooper), Doug (Justin Bartha) and Alan (Zack Galifianakis) are there to be by Stu’s side on his ‘D’ day.

Just like in Hangover I, Phil proposes a typical low key bachelor’s party the night before the wedding. Of course, Stu vehemently protests the same owing to fear of what happened in Las Vegas the last time they decided to have a similar party. Nevertheless, unforseen circumstances lead the friends to celebrating Stu’s impending wedding anyway with a small bachelor’s party. And what happens after that is an exact replica of what happened in the prequel. The gang wakes up the next morning (this time in Bangkok though) with no memory of what had happened the night before.

Worse yet; one of their friends is missing, and the gang needs to find him before the wedding. Thus starts a journey filled with confrontations, shame, dangers and of course, plenty of humor as the friends desperately try to piece together the events of the previous night and find their missing friend before it is too late.

What We Think:

Watch it and you will come to realise that there is absolutely nothing new in The Hangover II. The movie is an exact copy of its predecessor with little or no originality at all. However, what worked for The Hangover I, and works again for the sequel is the rib tickling comedy that keeps you glued to your seats from the moment the opening credits flash by.

Everything is the same in the sequel, right from the basic plotline, narrative and screenplay to even the characters who featured in the original. Accordingly, we have Leslie Chow who returns as the international criminal in addition to a fresh cameo by Paul Giamatti who plays the role of an additional crime lord who is connected to the friends via Leslie Chow. Even though the movie is quite predictable, the antics and misgivings of the wolf pack (the friends) manage to bring in the laughs. The narrative is also laced with plenty of bizarre moments and downright hilarious sequences that actually work in the film’s favor. Accordingly, you get to see the friends go through almost every kind of insane ordeal to get their missing buddy back. And chain smoking, getting kicked by Buddhist monks and handling drug dealing monkeys are only some of them!

Verdict:

The Hangover II may not necessarily be authentic and can in fact give you a sense of deja vu if you walk into the theater expecting to see something different than what you saw in the prequel. However, if you loved the original and the quality of laughs it produced, you would most likely like the sequel as well which turns out to be a quantitative mix of The Hangover and Due Date.
