Medical research has proved that herbs can cure spasms, headaches, anxiety, nervous disorder, colds and allergies etc.Herbal healing is followed across the world, and often in the same way.

Herbs that Heal-

Aniseed (saunf)

Aniseed is commonly used all over the world. It contains moisture, protein, sugar, essential oil, starch and ash. Its medicinal properties are tremendous,
It is used to relieve flatulence. It is an ideal medicine to cure digestive disorder. Gripe water for infants contains extract of this herb.

Insomnia is also treated with tea made from aniseed. It should not be boiled for too long as it may lose its benefits in the process.Aniseed is also used externally for the treatment of head lice. It is also used as a flavouring agent for mouth washes and dental preparations. Its seeds are used to flavour cookies, curries, cakes etc.

Babul (kikar)

Acacia is popularly known as babul. The leaves, bark, pods and gum of the tree have vast healing powers. The leaves and bark are used to control bleeding.Various parts of babul are used to control diarrhoea, Teeth and gums are strengthened by chewing the fresh bark of the tree. (Datun). It is used to treat eczema, tonsillitis, leucorrhoea.

Ajwain (bishop’s weed)

Ajwain is commonly used in indigenous medicine to treat diarrhoea, dysentery, flatulence and indigestion. A teaspoon of the seeds with a little rock salt is household remedy for indigestion.

A mixture of the seeds and butter milk helps in respiratory disorders. Chewing the seeds with a little salt and clove gives relief in cough.
Common cold, migraine, rheumatism, mouth disorder and ear ache can be treated by different uses of ajwain.The seeds of ajwain are commonly used as spice for flavouring food, as anti oxidant and preservative.

Fenugreek (methi)

Fenugreek is one of the most common herbs in the kitchen. It is used in the leafy form as well as in the form of seeds. Its medicinal value is tremendous. Its regular use keeps the body clean and healthy; it is an excellent blood purifier.

It cures digestive disorders. Take 1 teaspoon powder of roasted fenugreek seeds with curd in case of indigestion. It also soothes inflammation of the stomach and intestines.

Diabetic patients should take 1 teaspoon of the same powder with half a glass of warm water on an empty stomach in the morning.The rich iron content in methi leaves helps in blood formation and prevents anaemia.

Fenugreek tea is beneficial in bad breath, body odour and can be used as a mouth wash.It also corrects respiratory disorders such as cough; sinusitis etc.It brings down the body temperature in case of high fever.

Fenugreek seeds are useful in removal of dandruff; it also improves hair growth and prevents premature greying of hair. Make a paste of soaked methi seeds and apply on the scalp, wash hair after half an hour.

Curry Leaves

Curry leaves are widely cultivated for its aromatic nature. It is also popular for its qualities of a herbal tonic. It is a favourite ingredient in South Indian cuisine.

It strengthens the digestive system. It is also a mild laxative. Cosuming the juice of fresh curry leaves mixed with lime juice and sugar can treat nausea and vomiting caused by indigestion.Tender curry leaves are beneficial in treating diarrhoea and dysentery, when taken with honey.Chewing 10 fresh curry leaves, in the morning for three months can prevent hereditary diabetes.

Hair tonic prepared with curry leaves prevents premature greying of hair.To make the hair tonic, boil curry leaves in coconut oil till they turn black. Strain through a muslin cloth and store it.

Basil (tulsi)

Basil is grown in most Hindu homes for its holy as well as medicinal importance. It is widely used in worship of Gods and Goddesses. It is also an essential part of Prasad, which is distributed after any religious ritual.

Tulsi has tremendous healing and curative properties. It is used to treat malaria and dengue fever. Taking juice of 10 tulsi leaves with honey and black pepper can bring down the temperature.It is a very effective nerve tonic. Daily use of tulsi increases our bio energy level. It is believed that, spending sometime daily near this plant and inhaling its aroma can fill you with positive energy.

It is a blood purifier, hence it cures skin allergies and control acne problems, it also prevents common ailments like cough and cold. A deconcoction prepared with tulsi leaves and water gives relief from common cold.Tulsi leaves are used to prepare a paste, which can be applied on an insect or a wasp bite. Its antibiotic nature can prevent infections.

To treat teeth disorders make powder by grinding dry tulsi leaves and use it for brushing, to avoid mouth ailments and bad breath.Basil or tulsi is widely used in soups and salads in Indian as well as western cooking.

Parsley

Parsley is rich in ascorbic acid and a good blood cleanser. It prevents gas formation and is a popular remedy for indigestion.This herb is especially effective in treating menstrual irregularities. Taking parsley juice, combined with carrot and cucumber juices, gives relief in cramps and regularises the monthly periods.Parsley is freely used in food, such as salads and soups. It is easy to digest. It can be dried and stored, can be used for flavouring by sprinkling on the dishes.
