According to a study, conducted by Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School on 90,000 women, it was found that women with the highest calcium in their diet had the least possibility of developing kidney stones. Calcium is believed to neutralize the affect of oxalate’s present in the gastrointestinal tract. Reduced intake of calcium increases the amount of oxalate in the body. However, the same rule does not necessarily apply to calcium supplements.

Dairy products are therefore good for your health. 800-1000 mg of calcium from foods per day is the recommended dose to help prevent stone formation.

Magnesium
Magnesium is good for people with the risk of developing kidney stones. Homemade yogurt is a good source of dietary magnesium

Vitamin C
Calcium fortified fruit juices are good sources of both Vitamin C as well as calcium. Citrate has been found as an effective inhibitor of kidney stone formation. However, the amount of Vitamin C in your diet should not exceed 500 mg per day, because excess ascorbic acid could actually lower the pH of the urine reducing the level of urinary citrate that reduces formation of stones.

Potassium
Potassium rich fruits and vegetables are capable of preventing kidney stones.

Vitamin B6
At least 10mg of Vitamin B6 per day inhibits kidney stones.

Water
Drink adequate water every day to flash away the harmful chemicals from your body.

Foods to be avoided
Foods that have oxalate contents should be avoided by people who had already been treated for kidney stone complications. To prevent further occurrence of kidney stones you should avoid spinach, beans, beetroot, green pepper, cocoa, tea, peanuts, red meat, soft drink and wheat bran. Reduce the amount of salt in your diet to prevent excess calcium loss through urine.
