Winter blues are common and may last for a few days or even more. Often winter depressions become so severe that sufferers are forced to seek medical help. However, this Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) could be cured easily by stimulating our minds with light and color.

Here are some tips to help you deal with SAD.

Color Therapy
Winter is associated with colorlessness and dull colors. To lift your mood during the winter months, use bright and warm colors in your home. Avoid blue and Grey colors in your house. These cool colors would subdue your spirit further. Lighten up your house with various hues of red, orange and yellow. These colors, linked to the sun and warmth, would enliven your room. If it is not possible to repaint your house with bright warm colors, add these colors to your upholsteries and home decor. Hang colorful curtains. Decorate your house with plants and flowers. Plants would bring the fresh odor of spring and liveliness to your house.

Exercise
While practicing color therapy indoors, you should practice exercising outdoors. Regular physical exercises reduce stress and add warmth to your body. Winter is a great time for a number of outdoor winter sports. During weekends spend some time skiing. Even a fun snowball fight would help to cure your blues. When it is snowing and raining outside, try to exercise indoors. If you don’t have exercising equipments, such as a treadmill or a static bike at home, try to visit a gym.

Diet
During winter blues, people often indulge in carbohydrate rich diet. Carbohydrate acts on the brain increasing the serotonin level. Serotonin is believed to regulate our moods. However, excess carbohydrate attained from sugary snacks and unhealthy fried junk foods would increase the body weight. Therefore, in order to cure winter blue and at the same time preventing our body weight from rising, resort to a diet rich in complex carbohydrates such as rice, pasta, fruits and juices.
