However, lack of proper maintenance might reduce the efficiency of your water heater. Nonetheless, it is pretty easy to take care of your water heater. This can be done by anybody and takes only about an hour to complete the task.

Clean the tank

Sediments collecting at the bottom of your tank play a key role in reducing the life of your water heater by clogging the pipes. You should completely drain your tank at least once in six months.

Before you start the cleaning process, switch off the power of your water heater and if you are using a gas water heater turn the gas switch to the pilot setting.

Now turn off the cold water supply to the tank.

Connect a garden hose to the drain valve of the water heater. In order to prevent formation of vacuum during the cleaning process, open one of the faucets in your kitchen or bathroom.

After opening the pressure relief valve, open the drain valve to allow the hot water to drain out of the tank. Empty the hot water outside your house. Locate the far end of the hose at such a spot, where the hot water would not cause any damage. Once water stops coming out of the hose, you can be sure that you have successfully flushed the tank.

Now tightly close the drain valve of the tank.

Take off the hose and close the pressure relief valve. Turn on the cold-water inlets to the tank. Once water starts flowing out of the faucets in your house, you could be sure that your tank is completely full. Now turn on the electricity or gas supply of your heater to start the heating process.

Check the pressure relief valve

Once every six month check the pressure relief valve. The smooth functioning of the pressure relief valve is necessary to prevent any accidents that might result from sudden building of high pressure.
