Total Population of India At 1.21 Billion

Total Population of India At 1.21 Billion - IndiaPoliticians, scholars and common man have been eagerly waiting for the results of Census 2011. The provisional results are out and some astonishing facts have been reported. As per this census, the total population of India stood at 1.21 billion. This is really a huge number and scholars say there is nothing in it to boast for.

Population of India at present is roughly equal to the combined populations of United States, Japan, Bangladesh, Brazil, Pakistan and Indonesia. Experts believe that increasing population may pose some problems in coming years. If growth of population in India is seen for past 10 years, it is found that there has been increase of over 181 million people. However, there is something in the census to cheer a bit.

The growth rate of population in the year 2001 was 21.15% while in the year 2011, it is 17.64%. This growth rate should be understood with respect to periods 1991-2001 and 2001-2011 respectively. Another fact that can bring some happiness to the people of India is that 2001-2011 is the first decade since the start of census in which population growth is low as compared to the previous decade.

This fact has strengthened the hope that India might be able to control its population. It is to be understood that with the exception of 1911-1921, census is conducted after every 10 years with the start of new decade. However, scholars are still positive that India would surpass China with respect to population very soon.

At present, China is the most populous nation in the world. Unlike India, strong economy of China justifies the numbers of people living in the country. In other words, huge effort is required for elevating the economy of India so that demography justifies growth.

If demographics are seen, numbers of males as reported in the census 2011 are 623.7 million. Numbers of females in the nation at present is pegged at 586.5 million. Thus, nation again fails to maintain an equal male-female ration. When individual states as well as Union Territories are seen with respect to population, Uttar Pradesh still occupies the first position. The total population of Uttar Pradesh in the census 2011 is found to be 199 million.

Least populated among states and union territories is Lakshadweep with total population of 64,429. It is really very surprising to know that combined population of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra is more than the total population of United States.

If population density across the nation is seen, highest density is found in north-east district of Delhi, which is 37,746 people per square kilometers. Lowest population density has been reported in Dibang Valley located in Arunachal Pradesh, which is 1 person per square kilometer.

Child sex ration reported in the census 2011, which is 914 females against 1000 males, is the lowest since 1947. Literacy rate of population stands at 74.04% in the current census, which is 9.21% more than the literacy rate of 64.83% in 2001. Thus, 26% of the population in India is still illiterate and this is one of darkest aspects of census.
