The first line of treatment starts with a class of drugs, called as enzyme inhibitors or more specifically aromatase inhibitors. Aromatase is the precursor of estrogron hormone. This hormone is responsible for breast development. These medications block the aromatase enzyme and further estrogen. Aromatase inhibitors is used for estrogen positive (ER+) cancers. Tamoxifen is used for breast cancer, but this was associated with many risks like clots, strokes and heart related problems.

Now a days modern aromatase inhibitors such as letrozole (Femara), anastrazole (Armidex) and exemestane (Aromasin). They are very helpful in reducing the cancer risks in post-menopausal women and also it prevents the recurrence of breast cancer. These medicines are often used with tamoxifen to cut down risks of breast cancer, together with reducing the side effects.

The treatment with Transtuzumab is recommended for those breast cancers which are positive to human epidermal growth (HER/2 neu+) protein. It is actually a monoclonal antibody which targets this protein and prevents the multiplication of cancer.

Apart from these hormone altering drugs, there are some chemotherapeutics, which reduce the risk of breast cancer. They are older and most widely used form of medication for breast cancer. This is required especially in those cases where the breast cancer becomes very large. They include a number of combinations like doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide, paclitexal and doxorubicin or, a therapy comprising of doxorubicin, cyclophosphamide and paclitaxel.

Sometimes a mixture of both therapies is used for the destruction of malignant cancer cells responsible for breast cancer. This is also called as ‘adjuvant therapy’, and it lowers the incidence of breast cancer significantly. Sometimes physicians recommend gene therapy, for deciding which type of chemotherapy is more suited to you. Also inform your physician about which chemotherapy you need.

Apart from these therapies, sometimes radiation therapy also need to be used. In this therapy radiation are used to burn the affected cells. However his line must be the least preferred line of treatment, as it is associated with many side effects.
