Causes of High Triglyceride

The common causes of high triglyceride are obesity, diabetes, hypothyroidism, kidney disease and alcoholism. High triglyceride level may result as a side effect of certain drugs. Birth control pills, steroids, diuretics, such as caffeine and alcohol, beta-blockers, Tamoxifen, Estrogen replacement therapy might raise the triglyceride level in the blood. As we age, our triglyceride level increases rapidly. In some people, genetic factors might be responsible for high triglyceride level in the blood.

How to Reduce Triglyceride

Foods to be Avoided

Follow a diet low in fat and sugar content. High triglyceride level is associated with high blood cholesterol level. Moderate consumption of alcohol could increase the level of HDL or good cholesterol, but alcohol itself has the propensity to convert rapidly into triglyceride. Therefore, if your triglyceride level is high, alcohol consumption could only worsen your condition.

Foods that have a high content of sugar should be avoided. Although, fresh fruits are good for the health but canned fruits and packaged fruit drinks that contain high sugar level should be avoided. Intake of simple carbohydrates in the form of flour and white rice products, such as breads, pastas, should be reduced. Foods containing saturated fats and hydrogenised polyunsaturated fats should be avoided. Products such as margarine that is rich in trans-fats, butter, animal fats, palm and coconut oils, creams, whole milk products are capable of raising the triglyceride level.

Healthy Foods

Foods rich in fiber and omega-3 help in controlling the triglyceride level. Dried beans, rice and oat bran, flaxseed, leafy green vegetables are good for the health.
