The Singapore Zoological Gardens a.k.a Mandai Zoo is spread over a large area of 28 hectares and is managed by Wildlife Reserves Singapore. The Zoo attracts more than 1 million visitors every year and it houses a large number of threatened species. The Singapore Zoo follows the ‘open zoo’ concept. The zoo has never extended beyond the original 28 hectares.

Opening Hours & Rates

The zoo opens at 8:30 in the morning and last ticket sale is at 5:30pm. The ticket rats for adults are fixed at S$20.00 which also includes the GST. You can also opt for the Zoo saver package which comes for $27.00 for adults. The package includes admission charges, unlimited tram and boat ride.

Boat Ride & Tram Ride

The boat ride is functional from 8:30am and a round trip takes around 30min. The tickets are priced at S$6.00 and you can purchase the tickets at the dock only. The tram is a good way to learn more about the zoo. It covers a distance of 2.2 km. It has three stops and for $5.00 you can enjoy unlimited rides.

Getting Here

The easiest way to get to Singapore Zoo is by availing the MRT. You can get down at Ang Mo Kio station and take bus no. 138 from the interchange. If you are thinking of taking the bus, then hop on bus no 171 and alight at Mandai Road. Taking a taxi is probably an easy way to reach here and the journey will take approximately 30min.

Australian Outback

There are many attractions in Singapore zoo but the Australian Outback exhibit will give you to have a whole new experience. You will meet the famous icons of Australia – the kangaroos. The walk-through area of the exhibit is very rugged and perfect for the kangaroos and the wallabies.

There are daily feeding sessions where you can come close to these marsupials and even feed them from your own hands! The exhibit has an impressive repertoire of animals like emus, frill-necked lizards and bearded dragons. So, if you lucky, you can get a glimpse of all of them. The feeding session is at 11:00 am and at 4:00 pm. So don’t miss!

Cat Country

If you are a fan of the big cats, then you must not miss this exhibit. The glass fronted enclosures have the lions, jaguars and the leopards. They can come real close, so keep you cameras rolling.

Critters Longhouse

This place is inhabited by the small mammals of the world. They enjoy their cozy habitats in the complex. The most popular are the Goeldi’s monkeys who look similar to gorillas but the size don’t match exactly! If you look very closely inside the logs, then you may catch a glimpse of the spotted mousedeer. These creatures are a bit shy and try to remain elusive.

Elephants of Asia

Asian elephants have a tremendous influence on the continent and they are even worshipped as Gods. This is a good opportunity to learn about the behaviors of the elephants and interactive displays will enlighten you about these elephants.

There are daily shows at 11:30 and 3:30 which showcases the elephants at work & at play. There is a feeding session after the show gets over. You can buy a basket of fruit and offer them to the big guys!

Fragile Forest

This habitat showcases the importance and the dangers faced by the rainforests and the mangrove areas. The simulated rainforest area is deemed as one of the largest in the world. You will witness a wide range of rainforest species like butterflies, lemurs, mousedeer, sloths and fruit bats. As you walk through the fragile forest, you will realize the importance of rainforests and how even humans are dependant on them. The Wild Discoverer Tour is not to be missed as you can find out how butterflies are maintained and bred.

Jungle Breakfast

The Singapore Zoological Gardens is probably the only zoo of its kind which offers a unique dining experience. But you need to rise real early in order to attend this program. This morning program is extremely popular with the foreign tourists.

Lunch with Lions

This event has won numerous awards for Singapore Zoo. The Lunch with Lions program is, perhaps, the most exciting dining event in the zoo. The guests dine in an AC lion viewing gallery which enables the guests will have a full view of the lions while they are dining. The lions are so close to the glass panel that it seems that you are having your ‘lunch with the lions’. The buffet spread of the guests is very mouth-watering and has a variety of dishes.

Splash Safari

This takes place at the Shaw Foundation Amphitheater with all its stars – jackass penguins, Californian Sea lions and Caribbean manatees. You will learn a lot about these animals and enjoy their fun antics from close quarters. You will also get to know how sea lions lead difficult life due to marine pollution. The show timings are 10:30am and 5:00pm.

Dining at the Zoo

The zoo has a number of options when it comes to fine dining. The Ah Meng Restaurant is a self-service type which has a casual atmosphere all around. The signature dishes here are Hainanese Chicken Rice set and Biryani Rice set. The Pizzafari serves Italian styled thin-crust pizzas which are a big hit with the young crowds. If you have skipped your breakfast while coming here, then you can head to Ah Meng Kopi. You can have half-boiled eggs, kaya toast and Singapore laksa. Apart from these, the Zoo also has KFC restaurants and Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shop.

Shopping at the Zoo

The Zoo Shop is at the end of the Rainforest Walk. There is a wide range of apparel and accessories to choose from and the animal plush will simply drive the kids mad! You can take home an elephant painting or just a simple souvenir from the store. There are also mugs, beach shirts and pouches on the shelves. If you are confused, then take the help of a shop assistant.
