Vitamin B1 (Thiamine): Its main function is to enhance metabolism of sugar and starch, maintain the functions of nervous system, heart and muscle functions. Deficiency of this vitamin can cause Beriberi, a fatal disease whose symptoms are weakness, swollen and painful limbs, irregular heartbeat, edema, weight loss, etc. Some of the vitamin B1 rich food items are spinach, beef, soybeans, Brewer’s yeasts, whole wheat, gram, oatmeal, etc.

Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin): Riboflavin assists in providing healthy hair, nails and skin. It regulates the carbohydrate metabolism rate. Its main sources are cheese, milk, and other dairy products along with whole wheat and green vegetables. Deficiency of such vitamins may cause ariboflavinosis, which is an oral disease.

Vitamin B3 (Niacin): Lack of Niacin can cause Pellagra, a disease, which results in insomnia, weakness, dermatitis, mental confusion and at a later stage dementia and death. Niacin helps to promote secretion of sex hormones, blood circulation and strengthens the nervous system. The rich sources of Vitamin B3 are fish and chicken.

Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid): It assists in functioning of nerves and muscles, metabolism of carbohydrate, fats and proteins and enhances the immunity of your body. It helps in secretion of adrenalin from adrenal gland. Deficiency of such vitamin can cause psoriasis, swelling, headache, stiffness, rheumatoid arthritis, etc. The main sources are beef, banana, milk, egg, legumes, whole-grain cereal and bread, brewer’s yeast, etc.

Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine): Lack of vitamin B6 causes anemia, hypertension, water retention, dermatitis, depression, etc. The rich sources of pyridoxine are whole grains, banana, potatoes, chicken breast, oatmeal, etc. It helps in metabolism of fat, fatty acids and amino acids. Its major role is to increase body immunity by producing red blood cells and antibodies.

Vitamin B7 (Biotin): It assists the growth factor in infants and helps to provide shiny and healthy hair. The main sources are brewer’s yeast and nuts.

Vitamin B9 (folic Acid): Protects age effects on brain and supports pregnancy. Deficiency results in formation of cancerous cells, slow metabolism, fatigue and constipation. The major sources are meat, dairy products and eggs.

Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin): The major diseases caused for its deficiency will be macrocytic anemia, memory loss, mania, peripheral neuropathy, etc. Its major function is to facilitate functioning of cells, tissues, muscles and the entire nervous system. It also helps in digestion, protein synthesis, metabolism of fats and carbohydrates and formation of red blood cells. The main sources are fish, dairy products, meat and egg.
