Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with incidence in risks of heart diseases and stroke.

The study states that 9% of American children had levels of 15 nanograms per millilitre while 51% had levels of 15 – 29 nanograms per millilitre. While there are no universal standards of the desired levels of Vitamin D and optimum levels varied with age, it is generally agreed upon that a level of 30 nanograms per millilitre would be ideal.

Vitamin D Deficiency Causes: The most common causes of Vitamin D Deficiency are inadequate consumption of milk, lack of access to vitamin D rich foods and insufficient exposure to sunshine. Inability of the body to absorb the required quantity of Vitamin D despite availability could be a reason for deficiency – for instance, dark skin does not extract much of Vitamin D from sunshine.

Vitamin D Sources: Among vegan food, soy milk and cereals are good sources of the vitamin, though the most prominent sources are milk products, fish and fish oil, egg yolk and beef liver.

Vitamin D Disorders: Since Vitamin D helps maintain calcium and phosphate levels in the body, deficiency causes disorders associated with calcium deficiency, such as Rickets. Rickets develop among infants and children, characterised by bone softness and deformity, dental problems, muscle weakness and fragile bones and joints that increase the risk of fractures. Multiple Sclerosis is a nervous system disorder that affects the brain and spinal cord and impairs transmission of signals between the body and the brain, leading to muscle weaknesses, lack of co-ordination, disturbed vision, problems with sensations like numbness or pricking and loss of memory.

Vitamin D Deficiency has implications for cardiovascular diseases such as hyper tension, stroke and congestive heart failure. Obesity and diabetes mellitus are also thought to be associated with the deficiency.

Vitamin D Deficiency Treatment: Diet with Vitamin D rich food, food supplements and adequate exposure to sunlight are the chief remedies for the deficiency. A concentration of 30 nanograms per millilitre should be the adequate level, though individual levels need to be gauged depending on age in consultation with a physician. Having a balanced diet and basking in the sun regularly should help.
