Ovarian cancer develops in the epithelial cells or germ cells or stromal cells of the ovary. It can be seen in women around 20-80 years old. If detected early it can be cured easily. Some factors are found to promote ovarian cancer. They are

Causes of Ovarian Cancer

1. Family History

If any person in your family like your mother, daughter, sister etc had a cancer then you are also prone to get this. If they had cancer in their younger age then there is more risk in getting this disease. A person having the history of uterus, breast or colon cancer also has a tendency to get ovarian cancer. You have to better consult a genetic consular who can help you in identifying a specific cancer causing gene.

2. Age

It is an important factor in developing ovarian cancer. Ovarian cancer is common in women after 50 years old. This is almost around the menopause because at this period women are subjected to hormonal fluctuations which in turn increase the risk of ovarian cancer.

3. Pre history

Women having a pre-history of any cancer like breast cancer; colon cancer etc is more likely to get ovarian cancer.

4. Menstrual History

Women who had menstrual cycle before the age of 12 and who had her cycle after the age of 50 is prone to get ovarian cancer. These are women’s are subjected more hormonal activity than others.

5. Pregnancy History

Women who had no child or who had their first child after the age of 30 are more likely to get ovarian cancer. Multiple pregnancies and breast feeding are considered as a shield against ovarian cancer. Oral contraceptives are found to reduce ovarian cancer by 40-50%.

6. Fertility Drugs

A woman taking fertility drugs to induce ovulation are having higher risk of getting ovarian cancer. If the lady became pregnant while taking medicine then it is harmless.

7. Obesity

Obesity increases the risk of ovarian cancer especially in the post menopausal period. Obesity increases the production of estrogen which in turn stimulates the ovarian cells and increases the chance of cancer.

8. Talcum Powder

Use of talcum powder in the genital area or in the napkins is found to induce ovarian cancer in women. Talcum powder may contain asbestos which is a carcinogenic agent.
