What To Eat In Monsoons & Monsoons Food

We heartily welcome rain when it washes of all the sufferings of summer with cold shower. But monsoon is the ideal time for outbreak of various diseases. Monsoon also reduces our natural capability to fight diseases – our immunity. So diseases like food poisoning, diarrhea and cholera are common ailments during monsoon.

Other diseases include typhoid, dysentery, amebiosis, hepatitis and even polio. Most of the diseases at this time are waterborne. So be careful about it.

During monsoon the humidity level in the air affects our digestive system. The body does not get direct sunlight and vitamin D which help in digestion of food. So to remain fit you will have to take care of your daily diet.

Do not consume those things which are hard to digest. Eat dry food as much as possible. Avoid fried foods as they tax your digestive power. Stay away from oily, spicy and salty foods because these foods promote bloating and water retention.

Foods dry in nature such as nuts, corn, etc. are ideal for this season. Eat easily digestible foods like cereals, pulses, fruits and vegetables. Stay away from too much animal protein because animal protein, especially meat, is difficult to digest. Consume lots of garlic, bitter gourd, basil leaves, neem leaves, fenugreek, turmeric, etc. to enhance immunity power of your body and stay away from getting infected.

As the diseases during this season are mostly waterborne, you should be cautious about drinking water and the water with which you are washing your utensils. Boil water if you think that the source of drinking water is not reliable enough. Boil at least for 20 minutes to kill germs.

It is better to eat hot and freshly prepared food outside than to eat cold and pre-cooked food. Thus tea, coffee or soups are better than cold drinks or fruit juices. But packaged juices are safe. Stay away from eating salads outside as cut fruits and vegetables are breeding ground of various germs.

Avoid using heavy oils such as peanut oil, mustard oil or sesame oil as your cooking medium. Instead use olive oil or corn oil as they are very light in nature. Maintain a general hygiene to keep you and your surroundings clean.
